The ever-evolving design world

Technology today has had a huge impact on the design world.. it’s crazy when you think about it. Facebook, Twitter, social networking.. it’s all one ever-growing, connected link.

I am fortunate to live in a community where a new company has blossomed. It’s called Spoonflower and is actually a textile manufacturer right here in my own backyard! North Carolina has always been an industrial textile hub, but Spoonflower has really taken this to the next level. Enter you, me, the common craftperson, graphic artist.. you’ll see them all on the Spoonflower website creating one-of-a-kind designs. Each “picture” is available by the yard and in any textile format you could want.. you gotta see it!

I regularly peruse fabric manufacturers and their designers’ sites looking for the latest rage in color schemes and graphics, trying to predict and sometimes create the next “mod” fad in the boutique world. I liken the fabric industry to what my husband says about sports athletes: even though today has its latest and greatest, there’s always something better just around the corner. I love that creating and designing is a never-ending, ever-challenging work.

A good percentage of my business comes from custom work, with customers searching for the “perfect” fabric combo. Lately, I’ve been referring more and more of them to check out Spoonflower’s offerings.. there are thousands and thousands of designs to view. You can save favorites, which are viewable for other members to see. I love this feature because it enables me to see a certain look that a customer is after and the option to purchase right there. Personally, I love the mix of vintage and mod patterns.. you’ll find any kind of design you’re looking for right there. Amazing.

K. Off to sew some more.. With snow on the way, I’m grateful for an indoor workday!! I love my job!

Hugs,
s
